BIG READ: Fighting back against the global information disorder
Herman Wasserman writes for Business Live on how the public sphere is being contaminated by rumours, hate and deception.
Wasserman notes that we are currently witnessing a global “information disorder”, resulting from the combination of a changing media landscape and a fractious political environment. After two years of the COVID-19 pandemic we are familiar with the concepts of “fake news”, “disinformation” and “conspiracy theory”. It is not surprising that disinformation studies have become a growing area of research.
Within this article, Wasserman discusses the recently published report Meeting the Challenges of Information Disorder in the Global South, a multi-national collaborative project funded by the Canadian International Development Research Centre, and recently published book Disinformation in the Global South edited by himself and Dani Madrid-Morales.
